First of all, Justin thanks for the opportunity to interview you. It is truly an honor to meet such a skillfull player in real life and I bet our readers will love to learn a bit more about you. I have a couple of questions for you.
Kijk-online: Have you been to the Netherlands before? And how do you like it so far?
Justin: This is actually my first time and I really like it. I am staying in Amsterdam during Red Fight District.
Kijk-online: What exactly got you into fighting games? Did you just decide one day, I am going to be great in Street Fighter and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom? Or was this all part of your masterplan of fighting game domination?
Justin: It all started with playing Marvel Super Heroes and Street Fighter. My friends used to play all the time and I wanted to get better so I could compete with them. After a while I got really good at it and started to realize that I loved executing perfect combo’s, stringing these together and juggling. This actually got me into fighting games and gave me the drive to improve my skill and compete at a tournament level.
Kijk-online: What are/ is your absolute favorite fighting game(s)?
Justin: I really love Marvel vs Capcom 2 and still regard this as one of the coolest fighting games I’ve ever played. Naturally, I love playing it’s successor Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, but also love to play Street Fighter IV and the new Killer Instinct on Xbox One. To be honest I just love to play fighting games in general.
Kijk-online: How much time do you actually play fighting games to prepare yourself for all those tournaments? And do you have any tips for players that would like to achieve the same level of skill as you. What’s your secret? What’s the “Wong” factor? I just made that up.
Justin: When I was younger I actually used to play about six hours a day to keep myself sharp. Nowadays I just travel way to much and don’t even have time to practice that much anymore. I also prefer not to play every day because I wouldn’t want myself to get bored at playing fighting games. Traveling by plane is pretty time consuming even though I love the fact that I can play games for a living and travel around the world.
The only tip I can give is that you will have to practice alot. Learn your characters and don’t get discouraged by losing. Eventually even the best players will lose matches. Learn of your mistakes and never give up! Be competitive, keep an open mind, because people might mess up and grant you an opportunity to change a losing matching into your favor. Utilize the “will of fire”! There is no secret and there actually is no “Wong” factor.
Even at age 29 I still love competing in fighting game tournaments, but I don’t really know what the future will bring. I will keep playing as long as I enjoy it.
Kijk-online: Justin, thank you very much for your time and enjoy your stay in Amsterdam. Good luck in the upcoming Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 tournament and I hope to see you again sometime.
